5) The Open Flame, Gilbert. This restaurant centers around a grill where you can purchase then grill your own meat. It offers an upscale, comfortable environment. It also has a wonderful selection of dessert options.

4) What Cha' Smokin? Luther. If you want the best BBQ north of Texas, this is the place to go. When I went, I got fatty brisket sandwich and peanut butter banana pudding. The brisket was charred and crispy on the outside with moist, tender interior. The pudding was a perfect dessert. It felt like a southern dessert to round out the BBQ meal.

3) Aunt Maude's, Ames. This classic restaurant in Ames is perfect for celebrations, big and small. With old favorites on the menu, as well as new combinations of flavor as offered in a swanky and special environment.

2) The Cafe, Ames. Everything on the menu here packs a punch of pure flavor. I had the chicken gyro. Everything was fresh, the chicken was charred and smoky, the veggies were crisp and fresh, the hummus was nutty and garlicky. We also got the guac and chips. My daughter Elizabeth was 7 months at the time and absolutely loved the guac. This place makes me want to go back again and again.

1) Sweet Oaks Bakery and Bistro, Collins. The owners of this restaurant are the sweetest and kindest people you will meet. They have excellent customer service and really care about the community. The food is outstanding and always hot and ready. The bakery items are a special treat as well. If you get a chance, you should stop by in the morning and pick up a fresh cinnamon roll (that is if there is any left).
